Frequently Asked Questions
What is this rating system?
This is a skill-based rating system that estimates each player's strength using statistical modeling. It is based on the OpenSkill library, inspired by TrueSkill (developed by Microsoft). The system is similar to Glicko-2, a modern version of Elo rating used in chess.
What do the numbers mean?
• Rating (μ): Your estimated skill level. • Deviation (σ): Uncertainty in your rating. Lower means more confidence. • Δ Rating (Δμ): Change in your rating after each game. • Δ Deviation (Δσ): Change in uncertainty after each game.
How is my rating calculated?
Your rating is updated after each rated event based on your placement and your opponents’ ratings and deviations.
Why does my deviation (σ) go down?
Deviation decreases as you play more games and the system becomes more confident in your rating.
Can my rating go down?
Yes. If you perform worse than expected, your rating will decrease.
Is this the same as masterpoints?
No. Masterpoints are cumulative achievements. Ratings reflect your skill and can go up or down.
Which events are rated?
Currently, only events scored using Matchpoints are included. Teams events scored using IMPs will be added later as a separate rating.
